Getting Started
The fundamentals — what an eSIM is, what works, and how to buy one.
What exactly is an eSIM?
eSIM is short for Embedded SIM — a tiny digital chip soldered onto your phone's motherboard at the factory. Unlike a traditional plastic SIM, it can't be removed and swapped between handsets. Instead, you load a carrier "profile" onto the chip, and the phone treats that profile like any other SIM.
Because the chip is rewritable, you can store multiple profiles and switch between operators without juggling pieces of plastic. The technology is supported by most recent iPhone and Samsung models, as well as a growing number of laptops from brands like Dell and HP.

How do I order an eSIM?
Five short steps and you're done:
- Visit Kovitel.com
- Pick the country or region you'll be travelling in, choose a data plan, and tap Add to Cart
- Review your cart and proceed to Checkout
- Fill in your details and complete the payment
- Check your email — your QR code and setup instructions arrive within minutes
Can I use an eSIM for phone calls or text messages?
Kovitel data eSIMs are data-only — they don't come with a phone number for voice calls or SMS. If you still need calls and texts while travelling, keep your usual SIM enabled alongside the eSIM. Modern phones run both at the same time without any conflict.
Do I need to provide ID to buy an eSIM?
No — no identification documents are required. You simply pick the plan, complete checkout, and we deliver the QR code to the email address you provide. That's the entire purchase flow.
How do I check if my iPhone is eSIM-ready and carrier unlocked?
Two quick checks in the Settings app:
- Open Settings → General → About.
- Scroll down to the Carrier Lock line. If it reads "No SIM restrictions", your iPhone is unlocked and free to use with any carrier.
- Keep scrolling to find the Digital SIM (or "Available SIM") section. If you see a Digital SIM IMEI listed, your iPhone supports eSIM.
How do I check if my Android phone supports eSIM?
For Samsung Galaxy phones:
- Open Settings → About phone → Status information.
- Tap IMEI information.
- If you see an entry labelled "IMEI (eSIM)", your phone supports eSIM.
For other Android phones:
- Open the phone dialler and key in
*#06#. - If your phone is eSIM-capable, you'll see an EID (eSIM Identifier) listed alongside the standard IMEI number.
Orders & Payment
About buying, timing, and fixing checkout slip-ups.
Should I buy my eSIM before travelling or after I arrive?
We recommend buying it before you depart. That gives you time to install the profile while you're still on familiar home Wi-Fi, so when you land all you have to do is switch the line on — no fumbling around for airport Wi-Fi while you're jet-lagged and trying to find a taxi.
I typed the wrong email address at checkout. How do I update it?
No problem — get in touch with our support team and reference your order number. We'll update the email on file and resend your QR code and setup instructions to the correct address.
Installation & Setup
Timing, installation, and configuring the network for your eSIM.
When should I install my eSIM?
Best practice is to buy the eSIM ahead of time and install it on your phone around one day before you travel. Keep in mind that for most plans, the validity window begins the moment you install the profile and connect to the network — so installing it days in advance can eat into your usable days.
How do I install a Kovitel eSIM?
Installation steps vary slightly depending on your phone. Take a look at our full installation guide, which has device-specific walkthroughs for iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel — each with both the QR-code method and the manual entry method.
How do I configure the APN for my eSIM?
Each platform handles APN setup differently:
iPhone / iPad:
- Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data).
- Tap your eSIM line, then Cellular Data Network.
- Type in all APN values supplied by your provider.
Samsung Galaxy:
- Go to Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Access Point Name.
- Tap Add in the top bar.
- Enter the APN details and save.
Google Pixel:
- Go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs.
- Tap your eSIM, then Access Point Names.
- Tap the + button in the top bar and fill in the APN values.
Troubleshooting
The error messages people see most often, and how to clear each one.
What does "Invalid Activation Code" mean?
This error usually traces back to one of two issues:
- The QR code is damaged, blurry, partially hidden, or cropped.
- Your phone's camera is having trouble reading the image.
What to try:
- Wipe the camera lens and try scanning again with the code at a slightly different angle or distance.
- If scanning still fails, switch to the manual entry method — copy the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your email and type them in directly.
- Still stuck? Reach out to support and we'll send a fresh activation profile.
What does "Data Plan Cannot Be Added" mean?
This message means the QR code's unique activation code has already been consumed. The eSIM profile may have been installed earlier on this device, on a different device, or by someone else. Before contacting us, double-check whether the profile is already sitting on your phone:
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Plans
- Android: Settings → Connections → SIM card manager
If the profile isn't there, get in touch with support and we'll investigate.
What does "Cellular Plans from This Carrier Cannot Be Added" mean?
This message typically appears for one of two reasons: your phone is a CDMA-only model, or it's still locked to its original carrier. eSIM only works on unlocked phones with GSM support.
How to check if your phone is locked:
- Dial
*#06#on the phone keypad to retrieve the 15-digit IMEI number. - Look the IMEI up on a service such as imeipro.info, imeicheck.com, or imei.info.
If the lookup reveals your phone is locked, contact the carrier that originally sold it and request an unlock. If they're unable to help, you'll need to use a different unlocked phone with the eSIM.
What does "Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change" mean?
A few possible causes:
- Your phone has reached its eSIM storage limit.
- The same eSIM profile is already on this phone or on another device.
- The internet connection during setup was too weak or unstable.
What to try:
- Check how many eSIMs are stored and remove any old profiles you no longer use — our installation guide has step-by-step removal instructions for iPhone, Samsung, and Pixel.
- Confirm the profile isn't already installed (Cellular Plans on iOS, SIM card manager on Android).
- Switch to a more stable Wi-Fi network and try the installation again.
