How to Check Whether Your Phone Supports eSIM and Is Carrier-Unlocked

Before buying a travel eSIM, verify two separate conditions: your exact phone variant must support eSIM, and the phone must be allowed to use another carrier. A phone can pass one check and fail the other. Then confirm network compatibility and the plan’s current terms. The checks below use manufacturer guidance and avoid assumptions about any provider.

What must be true before an eSIM can work?

Four checks belong in the pre-purchase decision:

  1. eSIM hardware: The exact phone model and regional variant must support eSIM.
  2. Carrier unlock: If the travel eSIM is from a different carrier, the phone must be SIM-unlocked or the carrier must permit that eSIM.
  3. Network compatibility: The phone and plan must support compatible network technologies and bands in the destination. eSIM support alone does not prove this.
  4. Plan support: The provider must support eSIM activation for that device, country or region, and plan. A data-only plan may also have different voice, SMS, number, hotspot, roaming or OTP behavior.

“Unlocked,” “eSIM-compatible,” and “works everywhere” are not interchangeable. Check each item independently and save the exact model number, region, operating-system version, and provider terms you used.

How to check eSIM support and carrier lock on an iPhone

Check eSIM support on iPhone

Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data). If the device and software expose Add eSIM or Set Up Cellular, that is a useful device-side indication. Apple notes that cellular options are not available on every model or in every country or region. Use Apple’s model-by-model SIM type reference, and check the exact model and purchase region rather than relying on the iPhone family name.

You can also use Settings > General > About to record the model name and model number. Compare that information with Apple’s reference and the travel provider’s compatibility list. On some iPhone models, the physical-SIM arrangement also varies by purchase region; a SIM tray is not a reliable substitute for checking eSIM support.

Check whether an iPhone is carrier-unlocked

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General > About.
  3. Find Carrier Lock.
  4. No SIM restrictions means the iPhone is unlocked according to Apple’s unlock guide.

If that message is absent, contact the current carrier. Apple says only the current carrier can unlock an iPhone; Apple cannot perform the carrier unlock. Do not confuse the carrier-lock setting with the device passcode, Activation Lock, or a bootloader/developer setting.

On supported Pixel phones, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM. Google documents that the available path and features can depend on Android version, phone model, region, and carrier. Its SIM and eSIM guide lists model-specific exceptions and says some phones support eSIM only depending on the phone and mobile carrier.

Do not use a general statement such as “Pixel supports eSIM” as proof for a second-hand or imported device. Record the exact model, purchase country, and carrier history. If the setup option is missing, check the model documentation and contact the carrier before purchasing or scanning an activation credential.

Check whether a Pixel is SIM-unlocked

Google describes a SIM-unlocked phone as one that can be used with any compatible mobile carrier. The Google Pixel carrier guide explains that a Pixel can be sold SIM-locked or SIM-unlocked and that a carrier controls the unlock of a locked phone.

Pixel menus do not provide one universal, manufacturer-wide unlock label for every market and software version. Ask the carrier that sold or financed the phone to confirm its SIM-unlock status for the device’s IMEI. If the carrier confirms an unlock, keep the confirmation. A successful unlock still does not prove that a particular Vietnam plan, band, roaming profile, or data service will work.

Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager. On a supported model, Add eSIM should be available. Samsung’s SIM cards for Galaxy phones and tablets guide describes adding an eSIM by QR code or carrier discovery. Samsung also warns that eSIM support can vary by country of origin and that some carriers may not support the eSIM capability of a particular Galaxy phone.

Check Samsung’s support page for the exact model and country variant. A missing Add eSIM option can mean that the model, regional firmware, carrier configuration, or software does not expose eSIM; it is not a reason to guess or to scan a QR code repeatedly.

Check whether a Galaxy is carrier-unlocked

Samsung says unlock requirements are set by the carrier, not Samsung. Its carrier-change guide recommends contacting the carrier and explains that a phone must be unlocked when moving between carriers. Ask the original carrier to verify the IMEI’s SIM-unlock status and any outstanding account or financing condition.

You can inspect Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status to see the current network and service state, but that screen is not a universal proof of an unlocked device. A network name or signal indicator describes the current connection; it does not prove that another carrier’s eSIM will be accepted.

What if the phone’s status is unclear?

Use this order of checks before purchasing:

If you can, test with a different physical SIM or eSIM from another carrier after backing up important information. A test is evidence for that device and carrier combination, not a guarantee for every travel plan. Never publish or share an IMEI, EID, QR code, activation code, or account screenshot containing personal information.

What to record before you buy

Keep a short, private preflight record:

  • phone brand, exact model number, regional variant, and operating-system version;
  • eSIM menu result and, where relevant, EID availability;
  • carrier-lock result or the original carrier’s confirmation;
  • provider compatibility page and its check date;
  • required network bands or technologies, if the provider documents them;
  • plan features you actually need, including data-only versus number, voice, SMS, hotspot, roaming and OTP behavior;
  • the installation path and whether the plan’s validity starts at purchase, download, installation, or first connection.
