Guide et FAQ

Getting Started

What an eSIM is, which phones work, and how to buy.

What exactly is an eSIM?

eSIM is short for Embedded SIM — a digital chip built into the phone. You load a carrier profile onto it instead of inserting a plastic SIM. Most recent iPhones, Samsung phones, and Pixels support it.

What is Kovitel eSIM?

Kovitel eSIM is provided directly by Viettel, Vietnam’s strongest mobile network. You get local 5G priority access — not a throttled roaming reseller — with coverage from city centres to mountains and islands.

Which devices work with Kovitel eSIM?

Most flagship phones from 2019 onwards. Confirm your model on the compatibility list, and check that the phone is carrier-unlocked.

How do I order an eSIM?
  1. Go to kovitel.com
  2. Choose the 7, 15, or 30-day plan and add it to cart
  3. Check out and pay
  4. Your QR code and setup email arrive in about 5–10 minutes
Can I use an eSIM for phone calls or text messages?

Yes — Kovitel eSIM includes a local Vietnam number (+84). You can receive calls and SMS on that number, but you cannot make calls or send SMS from it. Keep your home SIM on for outgoing calls and texts. Dual-SIM phones run both lines at once. WhatsApp and similar apps work over data as usual.

Do I need to provide ID to buy an eSIM?

No. No eKYC, no passport upload. Pick a plan, pay, and we send the QR to your email.

Is hotspot / tethering supported?

Yes. You can share the Viettel eSIM connection with other devices.

How do I check if my iPhone is eSIM-ready and unlocked?
  1. Open Settings → General → About.
  2. Carrier Lock should read No SIM restrictions.
  3. If you see a Digital SIM / eSIM IMEI, the iPhone supports eSIM. You can also dial *#06# and look for an EID.
How do I check if my Android phone supports eSIM?

Samsung: Settings → About phone → Status → IMEI information. Look for IMEI (eSIM).

Other Android: dial *#06#. An EID means the phone supports eSIM.

Orders & Payment

Buying, timing, and checkout mistakes.

Should I buy my eSIM before travelling or after I arrive?

Buy before you fly. Install on home Wi-Fi. When you land, turn the Kovitel line on — no hunting for airport Wi-Fi.

When does the data plan start?

Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to Viettel in Vietnam, not at checkout. Install the day before you travel, but do not enable data roaming on that line until you land.

I typed the wrong email address at checkout. How do I update it?

Message support with your order number. We update the email and resend the QR and setup instructions.

Installation & Setup

When to install and how to get online.

When should I install my eSIM?

Install about one day before you travel on stable Wi-Fi. Do not switch on data roaming for the Kovitel line until you have landed.

How do I install a Kovitel eSIM?

Scan the QR in the email, or enter the SM-DP+ address and code manually. Full walkthroughs for iPhone, Samsung, and Pixel are on the installation guide.

How do I configure the APN for my eSIM?

Most Kovitel profiles set APN automatically. If data does not start:

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → eSIM line → Cellular Data Network — enter the APN from your email.

Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Access Point Names → Add.

Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → eSIM → Access Point Names → +.

Troubleshooting

The error messages people see most often.

What does “Invalid Activation Code” mean?

Usually a blurry or cropped QR, or the camera cannot read it.

  • Clean the lens and scan again at a different angle.
  • Use manual entry with the SM-DP+ address and code from the email.
  • Still stuck? Ask support for a fresh profile.
What does “Data Plan Cannot Be Added” mean?

That QR has already been used — on this phone or another. Check if the profile is already installed:

  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Plans
  • Android: Settings → Connections → SIM manager

If it is not there, contact support.

What does “Cellular Plans from This Carrier Cannot Be Added” mean?

The phone is often carrier-locked or CDMA-only. eSIM needs an unlocked GSM phone. Dial *#06# and check the IMEI on a lookup site. If it is locked, ask the original carrier to unlock it.

What does “Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change” mean?
  • The phone has hit its eSIM storage limit — delete old profiles.
  • This eSIM is already installed on this or another device.
  • Wi-Fi during setup was weak. Switch network and retry.
